Week 6 and 7: My first research task to recommend and implement a strategy

These 2 weeks touched more on me learning how to research. Researching is an amazing skill to have in the media as:


“Research is an essential tool to gather facts, opinion and information pertaining to a specified problem, situation or opportunity. Research in media focuses on the communication process and examines the relationships among the media organizations and the target audience”


Behind every successful media plan is a meticulously crafted strategy. And before moving forward with selecting the channels or tactics to execute, a media strategist must nail down the campaign’s objectives, goals, and target audiences.


Having a concrete media strategy in place will help to achieve more measurable results and gather deeper insights (leading to a stronger performing campaign overall). Here are the essential components to get you started:

1. Setting measurable goals

2. Identifying & researching your target audience- Where and how do they spend most of their time?, What does a typical day look like for them?, What are their fears?, What are their interests, What media channels do they use?

3. Determining your media budget

4. Establishing your key messaging points


To do my research I looked at inspiration from other production companies and looked at the ins and out of the VIMEO landscape.


I took on the responsibility of recommending and implementing a Strategy to attract new clients to our service. This involved me researching how to use Vimeo more effectively as my manager didn’t know how to utilise it to its best capabilities. I then presented within the week my research finding on how to attracts potentials clients to our page – either to direct them to documentaries, films or achieve footage that’s available to purchase. Before this research project the vimeo page was unorganised and unclear.


Overall, my manger was very impressed with the research and then he suggested I should start reorganising it myself. Also, this was my first vital research task and he had suggestions to make it even better – by looking at engagement of each video and what does well and how do it do well. This shows more how I can compete with other media industries.
